Do I still practice this shape? Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I did. Do I practice the actions of this shape? ALL THE DAMN TIME.

When I look back at photos like this, I ask myself “Did this posture improve my quality of life?”. The answer to me is no. My life didn’t get any better because I could make myself look like this. My ego was stroked because of it, but not my quality of life. I didn’t find more comfort in my body throughout the day because I could touch my toes with my fingers in a hollow back pincha. I didn’t reach enlightenment.

Did the actions of this posture improve my quality of life? 💯. Strong, stable & mobile shoulders, length to the front of the hips, strength and mobility in the back body. Hell yeah that created more comfort in my daily life. It sure made it easier to do the things I need to do in my non yoga practice life.

My personal practice and my teaching changed when I realized, while rehabbing an injury, that it’s really not about the shape or the posture. The prettiness of the shape has no affect on quality of life and it’s about what are the postures trying to do. I want students and myself to understand that if you are achieving the actions, then it really doesn’t matter what it looks like. You could have the “Instagram’s ugliest wheel” award but if you are creating strength, length & stability of shoulders, strength and mobility of the posterior chain, and length to the front body then who f’ing cares what it looks like.

Now I’m not saying that there isn’t something to seeing how far we can take our bodies or to have goals. I’m just saying focus on the work. Don’t take shortcuts just replicate shapes. It’s like training for a marathon. The race is only a few hours and it may not go as well as you planned. But the quality of life comes from the months of hard work training, not the actual race.

So as yoga practitioners & teachers I ask that you think less about the shape and more about what are we really trying to do.
Coming September!! I’m excited to announce anoth Coming September!! I’m excited to announce another round of my 200hr Teacher Training program presented with @yogablissmercerisland.

I tell people all the time that teacher trainings are my absolute favorite thing to teach. I have a captive audience that is willing and wants to to actually listen to me talk about how the shoulder works when the arms are overhead or spend hours looking at posture and adjustments. I know that in a public class, there are some students saying to themselves “Enough with the hip flexors!” and just want to move. We do plenty of that (the moving part) but those who know me know that I just can’t help myself sometimes 😀. Teacher trainings are my happy place.

If you’re wanting to learn more than is possible in a 60 or 90 minute class, or if you want to learn how to teach yoga, I invite you to join me on a journey to develop and expand your personal yoga practice; to find your voice; and to learn how to share yoga with others in a mindful, practical, and progressive manner.

There will be an online option to this training as well.

If you or already a teacher but want to learn from me, my advanced training starts this fall as well.

Write “200” in the comments if you’re interested and I’ll get you more details.
Those ‘cool’ looking inversions and arm balanc Those ‘cool’ looking inversions and arm balances you see people doing in class and on instagram don’t just magically happen overnight.

Each posture, arm balance & inversion are best learned gradually with the proper set up, the understanding of the technique required of the asana and repetition, repetition, repetition.

In this 2 part workshop you can expect to:

✅ Build an understanding of what needs to be engaged, strengthened & lengthened as you work your way into these challenging postures

✅ Learn the technique and build skill on your way to balancing

✅ Learn that sometimes take a step back is actually taking 2 steps forward

✅ Explore transitioning in and out of these asanas

✅ Build integrity; no cheating or shortcuts just to create a “shape”

This workshop is for anyone who practices yoga. There are some advanced poses, but the focus of this workshop is on the actions, not the results. As always with yoga, this is a practice not a performance.

Part 1: Arm Balances (arms below the shoulders)
Think crow, side crow, baby crow, one-legged crow, supreme crow, the koundinyasanas, 8-angle, peacock & more

Part 2: Inversions (arms above the shoulders)
Think handstand, forearm balance, headstand

When: June 4th & 5th 12-2PM
Where: @beoneyogastudiokirkland
I get the question all the time, “How do I know I get the question all the time, “How do I know what 200hr Teacher Training program I should choose?”

I first answer it by letting them know how excited I am that they’ve decided to take this step on the yoga journey. After that it’s getting down to the actual question. Watch the video to see in detail what I say but if you’re short on time, here’s the Cliff’s notes version:

1️⃣ No 2 trainings are equal and that all trainings are different

2️⃣ Main thing: DO YOUR RESEARCH! Don’t just take a training because it’s from your local studio. If you choose the wrong training, you’ll more than likely have to take another.

✅ Investigate the lead teacher

A) Who have they studied with?

B) How long have they been teaching?

C) What’s their style? More technique/alignment based or are they more philosophical/spiritual?

D) Do you resonate with them or their style?

E) Do they see you only as a transaction?

✅ Is there a syllabus? Do they let you know what you can expect to learn in the program.

✅ How many students will there be in the training?

✅ What’s the cost? Don’t just go for the low-ball offer

✅ What is the schedule? You don’t want to stress about how you are going to balance life and training schedules.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done new year It’s been a long time since I’ve done new year’s resolutions. I look at them like I do Valentine’s Day; I should be celebrating my wife all year round, not just showing all my affection on one day. So in a sense I do resolutions, but I work on myself throughout the year, constantly looking at where I’m at and adjusting where I need to. Not waiting until the next year.

But this year I did add something at the beginning of the year by coincidence. I’m challenging myself to ask “why?” more often. “Why am I angry or upset?”, “Why am I energized?”, “Why do I feel like I need that drink?”, “Why am I doing this or feeling that?” and so on. Instead of walking through this life on autopilot, I’m trying to be more mindful of what is happening. Not saying that asking why will change what I’m doing or how I feel, but it keeps me in the moment and allows me to understand why I am doing or feeling a certain way.

I encourage you to try it out. Ask yourself “why?” more often. See what happens when you do.

On a side note because it’s the new year, I feel like I need to remind people that doing twists in yoga won’t actually detox the body. You don’t go to rehab and all they have you do is a bunch of twists 😉. So if you see “yoga for detoxing” ask “why?”, know that it’s kind of bs and take the class or not 🤪🤷‍♂️

Usually every month I focus my teaching on a speci Usually every month I focus my teaching on a specific region of the body, action of the body or building towards peak postures. But this month, I wanted to create a practice where we see if we can change our experience without having to change much in the poses.

Take this side angle in the picture for example. By switching the down arm from inside of the leg to outside of the leg, we move from working inside of the hip and thought to outside. Not much changed in the posture but what happens internally does.

Come join me the rest of the month and explore a few ways to change your experience in postures you’ve been doing forever.
